How Does Blue Light Affect Indoor Planting?

Blue light (roughly 400–500 nm) is the most discussed part of the grow light spectrum after red. For indoor growers, it plays three practical roles.

What blue light does

  1. Keeps plants compact. Blue light inhibits stem elongation (shade-avoidance response). Seedlings and veg plants under blue-heavy light grow shorter, sturdier, and less leggy.
  2. Drives photosynthesis. Chlorophyll absorbs strongly in the blue range — blue photons are photosynthetic, not just “morphological.”
  3. Opens stomata. Stomatal aperture responds to blue light, which supports CO₂ uptake and transpiration.

Practical guidance

  • Seedlings: a blue-rich spectrum (or a dedicated veg mode) gives you compact, stocky seedlings instead of stretched ones.
  • Veg: keep blue moderate (e.g., 20–30% of spectrum) for structure without sacrificing growth rate.
  • Bloom: you still need blue — cutting it entirely reduces trichome and secondary-metabolite production in many plants, but the ratio shifts toward red/far-red.
